Genologyexplained.com has a list of Christmas traditions that once defined the American holiday season (60s & 70s)—and then disappeared completely.

The Sears Christmas Wish book Arrival!

600 pages, five pounds of glossy dreams, a Mailman's worst day!

Kids claimed them immediately. Different colored pens for each child, circling desired toys for months before Christmas.

The 1969 edition had 225 toy pages alone. Parents used them as behavior tools—”Santa’s watching your wish book choices.”

Internet shopping in the 90s killed the anticipation of flipping through actual pages.

Today marks the anniversary of the world's first traffic light, installed in London in 1868. It was gas-powered and had to be run by a police officer.  It wasn't a success. Less than a month after it was installed, it exploded, injuring the police officer. The technology was abandoned for decades.

The minimalist "Clean Girl" trend is facing a counter-movement celebrating "Wabi-Sabi," a traditional Japanese philosophy that finds beauty in imperfection, transience, and natural wear. On social media, this translates to showing off handmade, slightly flawed, or quirky items and spaces.

Wabi-Sabi is guided by several key principles

Imperfection and Asymmetry

Transience and Ephemeral Beauty - nothing last forever

Simplicity and Elimination of the Unnecessary

Naturalness and Authenticity

Subtlety and Understated Elegance

Here are some practical ways to integrate its principles into your daily life:

Declutter and Simplify Your Space: Start by decluttering, removing unnecessary items, and focusing on the essentials.

Embrace Imperfection in Your Surroundings: Learn to appreciate the unique character of things that show signs of wear and the story they tell.

Appreciate the Beauty of Nature: Spend time in nature and bring natural elements like stones, branches, or wildflowers into your home.

Practice Mindful Consumption: Be more conscious about what you buy, choosing quality over quantity and items that will age gracefully.

Find Beauty in the Everyday: Cultivate a mindset of appreciation for the simple moments and the beauty that surrounds you.
