U.S. consumers who have had their fill of finding protein added to everything from cereal to ice cream are about to meet the next big food fad: fiber.

Americans have been boosting their protein intake for years; even Pop-Tarts and Starbucks are selling protein-enhanced products. But the number of new products promoted with high or added fiber saw a big uptick in the U.S. this year, according to market research firm Mintel. 

Unlike muscle-building protein, fiber isn’t sexy. It’s a carbohydrate found in plants that your body can’t break down. It helps feed gut bacteria and move food through the digestive system.


“Folks don’t want to talk about it at a dinner party,” said Debbie Petitpain, a registered dietitian nutritionist and a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.


There are two main types of fiber. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and forms a gel-like material that feeds gut bacteria. It’s found in foods like oats, peas, beans, apples and carrots. Insoluble fiber doesn’t dissolve in water and moves food through the digestive system. It’s found in whole wheat flour, popcorn, wheat bran, nuts, green beans and potatoes.

Try to eat five or more servings of fruit and vegetables daily. 


Under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s guidelines, adults should aim for 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories they consume. That’s about 25 grams of fiber for women and 38 grams for men each day. Petitpain said Americans generally only get about two-thirds of that amount.


But be careful...don't fibermaxx! There is no defined upper limit for fiber intake, Kersten said. But increasing fiber can cause painful gas and bloating, especially if it’s done quicky.

Petitpain said people should increase their fiber intake gradually and drink plenty of water.


Chadwick Boseman was honored with a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday, and his widow Simone Boseman spoke to us about his legacy and what this honor does for it.

As you know, Chadwick made history with his portrayal as T'Challa in "Black Panther" ... but Simone tells us its impact reached beyond just that film franchise.

In addition to "Black Panther," Chadwick also appeared in "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" -- earning him an Oscar nomination -- played Thurgood Marshall in "Marshall," Jackie Robinson in "42," and James Brown in "Get on Up" before passing away from colon cancer in 2020. He was 43.

‘Seal-cam’ will beam England’s pup season into homes

For the first time, breeding season at England’s largest grey seal colony will be broadcast live over the web. 

The spectacle was previously only available to people who had the time and money to take a boat trip to Blakeney Point in Norfolk. But now a solar-powered camera is set to provide a live stream from the heart of the colony, giving more people the opportunity to witness pup season. 

An estimated one in 10 of the UK’s seals are born at Blakeney Point, where their numbers have increased by more than three-quarters since 2018.
