Getting a pumpkin this week?  Don't cut the stem off.

It will last much longer if you cut a hole in the bottom or back of it instead.

The stem of your pumpkin, of course, was attached to the vine, so it contains a lot of nutrients required to keep your pumpkin healthy.

When the stem is left on, it helps seal the pumpkin and slows down rotting.

Chapman University conducts an annual poll of the real-life fears everyday Americans have, and topping the list is:  Corrupt government officials.  69% of people say they're "afraid" or "very afraid" of that.

Oh, and it doesn't matter who's in power.  It was also #1 last year and 10 consecutive years overall now.

The worst states to be in during a zombie apocalypse are:  New Jersey . . . Connecticut . . . Pennsylvania . . . Massachusetts . . . and California.  The best places to be are:  Alaska . . . Maine . . . South Dakota . . . Montana . . . and North Dakota.

The experts at CanadaCasino evaluated each state’s levels of zombie preparedness “scientifically” based on six key metrics: population density, percentage of water area, number of community hospitals, number of airports, number of fishing, hunting, and trapping stores, and the number of military bases.

Today is International Animation Day.

Just because a character is animated doesn't mean they're completely made up.  Some are inspired by real people.

Betty Boop:  She was mainly inspired by 1920s singer Helen Kane, but her facial features and hairstyle were inspired by actress Clara Bow.

Ursula from "The Little Mermaid":  She was designed after the drag queen Divine, star of classic John Waters movies like "Pink Flamingos", "Female Trouble", and "Hairspray".

Aladdin:  Tom Cruise inspired his facial expressions and mannerisms.

Miss Piggy:  She was inspired by jazz singer Peggy Lee's blonde locks and glamorous persona.

Edna Mode (no capes) from "The Incredibles":  She was partially based on Hollywood costume designer Edith Head, but also has traits from British fashion designer Mary Quant and Anna Wintour.

Lord Farquaad from "Shrek":  He was allegedly inspired by former Disney CEO Michael Eisner, since there was an early rivalry with DreamWorks.

Dr. Doofenshmirtz from "Phineas and Ferb":  He was modeled after one of the show's creators, Jeffrey Marsh.

A Navy vet named Mike McCastle is in the news for breaking two world records.  He did four miles of walking lunges and broke the records for "most lunges in an hour" and "longest distance covered."  He dedicated the feat to his three-year-old son to teach him about perseverance.

PTSD flashback to the President's Physical Fitness test in High School. Yea..just throw these things at us with all the sit-ups and sprints. Ugh...I hate you!!!

Today's Useless Fact of the Day - Amethyst got its name from the ancient Greek phrase for "not drunk" . . . because there was a belief that if you put the stones in your alcohol, it would keep you from getting too drunk. (how's that been working out for you?)
