Duncan Sheik has died. He was 56.
His family posted, "From his Grammy-nominated hit “Barely Breathing” to his groundbreaking, Tony and Grammy Award-winning work on Spring Awakening, Duncan’s artistry touched many and leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.”
Sheik’s self-titled debut album was certified gold after its release, with “Barely Breathing” becoming a pop radio mainstay of the 1990s through to today. He released eight additional studio albums over the course of his career.

Staff at a NOAA Fisheries office in Florida were stunned when an injured pelican literally waddled up to their front glass door and started knocking with its beak to ask for help. The team stepped in, treated the bird, and got it safely to wildlife rehab.

Yellowstone National Park finished its annual end-of-season thermal vent cleanup. Among the items retrieved by park rangers deep inside the boiling vents: over 300 baseball caps, dozens of hair scrunchies, several pairs of glasses, and $18 in loose change thrown in like a wishing well.

Cops in Scotland were notified of a golf cart theft after the cart was seen heading away from a golf course. The cart and its driver were located, and the driver — dressed as a clown — was found to be intoxicated.

Today’s Useless Fact of the Day - The Premiere of Friends (1994): NBC officially launched the iconic sitcom following the lives of Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe hanging out at Central Perk, instantly turning it into a defining cultural phenomenon of the 1990s.
Before the sitcom settled on Friends, producers and creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane pitched and tested several working titles, including Insomnia Cafe, Friends Like Us, and Six of One, before finally shortening it right before premiere.
