The powerful Vera Rubin Observatory has spotted what seems to be a dwarf planet circling the sun in the frigid depths beyond Neptune.

The icy object, known as 2026 ED138, is likely between 600 and 1500 kilometers (373 to 972 miles) wide, scientists say. It's therefore probably big enough to be sculpted into a sphere by its own gravity — a key characteristic that separates dwarf planets from asteroids and other small space rocks.

They will do anything to screw up my mnemonic device!!!!

You may know the spiral well: It starts off as a single worry then it takes on a life of its own. All the negative what ifs?

What if everything turns out terribly and nothing is ever okay?!

This emotional tailspin is what therapists call catastrophizing, a type of negative thought pattern that zeroes in on worst-case outcomes.

If fixating on the worst-case outcomes makes us feel awful, why do we do it anyway? Believe it or not, it’s your mind attempting to be helpful. It's trying to keep us safe by detecting threats to our survival.

One thing you can try is positive affect treatment, or PAT, which is especially useful when catastrophic thinking leaves you feeling hopeless and numb. “When you flood the brain with positive experiences and anticipation of the future, it becomes much harder to dwell in catastrophizing/"

Get outside and notice the (good) world around you.

A group convened with some of the most influential figures in modern happiness research to pool their years of research and professional experience.

The single most recurring theme in the discussion, however, was the importance and joy that comes from social relationships. They are considered to be a basic psychological need.

Connection may not always happen on its own, but it often begins with simple acts: taking an interest, reaching out and showing up. These are things we all can do.

Today's Useless Fact of the Day celebrates Cookie Monster Day!

Jim Henson originally created the puppet in 1966 for a General Foods commercial to play "Wheel-Stealer," a monster who ate Wheels snacks. He was later reworked into "Arnold the Munching Monster" for a Frito-Lay commercial before finally becoming Cookie Monster on Sesame Street in 1969.

He has a real first name. According to a 2004 Sesame Street episode, Cookie Monster stated that before he ate his first cookie, his name was Sid (or Sid MacCookie).
