The Continental Congress actually voted to separate from Great Britain on July 2, 1776. John Adams was so convinced July 2nd would be the historic holiday that he initially refused to attend July 4th events in protest. July 4th is simply the day Congress formally adopted the wording of the Declaration of Independence document.
Only two men actually signed the document on July 4th: John Hancock and Charles Thomson. Most of the other 54 delegates didn’t ink their names until August 2, 1776, and some signed as late as November.
Independence Day wasn’t declared an official federal holiday until 1870—nearly 100 years after the nation was founded.
The current 50-star American flag design was created by a 17-year-old named Robert Heft in 1958 for a high school history project. His teacher originally gave him a B-minus because Alaska and Hawaii hadn't even become states yet. Heft sent his design to President Dwight D. Eisenhower anyway; once the government chose it as the official flag, his teacher rightfully bumped his grade to an A.
The Declaration of Independence was written on a laptop! But, how? You say.
Thomas Jefferson didn’t write the draft at a massive mahogany desk. He used a small, portable wooden writing desk that rested directly on his lap—which people at the time literally referred to as a "laptop."

We love our flag, until….
A large U.S. flag, 3000-square-feet, flown at World Wrestling Entertainment headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut, blew off its pole and hit power lines, causing electricity to go out for thousands.
It happened during a storm Sunday afternoon. While trying to remove the flag, it again disrupted power.

According to the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA), July 4th is the single most popular grilling holiday of the entire year, consistently beating out Memorial Day and Labor Day. Roughly 70% of grill owners fire up the grates on this day.

July 4th is the biggest hot dog day of the entire year. According to the National Sausage and Hot Dog Council, Americans consume an estimated 150 million hot dogs on this day alone. That is enough hot dogs to stretch from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles five times.
According to summer consumer data, upwards of 65% to 68% of hosts feature burgers as a main dish at their cookouts.
Chicken Breasts frequently rank as the #2 individual item on national surveys because it's viewed as a leaner, versatile everyday option.
Roughly 60% of summer hosts put hot dogs on the menu
Roughly 32% to 48% of Americans consider ribs an essential component of an ideal barbecue plate.
We take our BBQ flavor seriously. HPBA data shows that 66% of grillers rely heavily on dry rubs and spice blends, another 66% use liquid marinades, and 34% toss real hardwood smoking chips onto their coals to catch that perfect smoky finish.

Today's Useless Fact of the Day -
Out of all the U.S. Presidents, only one was born on the actual Fourth of July: Calvin Coolidge (born in 1872).
BUT
Three U.S. Presidents—John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe—all passed away on July 4th. Even crazier? Adams and Jefferson, who were political rivals-turned-friends, died within hours of each other on the exact same day in 1826: the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration.
