7/21/26 - Junk Food Day, Mosquito Season, and Stuffy Nose Hack (questionable)

Tuesday 7/21/26

Invite an Alien to Live with You Day

Legal Drinking Age Day

National Be Someone Day

National Lamington Day

National Tug of War Tournament Day

Take a Monkey to Lunch Day

National Junk Food Day - Long before the term "junk food" caught on, medical columns in the 1940s and 50s referred to these items as "cheat foods"—specifically defining them as anything made primarily of white flour, refined white sugar, or heavy syrups.

Surveys tracking how people celebrate the day show that the top three most commonly indulged comfort foods are potato chips, ice cream, and chocolate candy

A study found that dogs have the inborn ability to sense the mental state of humans. Essentially, they can mind read their owners and adjust their behavior accordingly. (Researchers discovered that cats also have this ability, but do nothing about it because they just don't care.]

It's Mosquito season!!! How should you deal with them besides staying in the house.

Remove Mosquito Habitats

Eliminate standing water in rain gutters, old tires, buckets, plastic covers, toys, or any other container where mosquitoes can breed.

Empty and change the water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels, and potted plant trays at least once a week to destroy potential mosquito habitats.

Drain or fill temporary pools of water with dirt.

Keep swimming pool water treated and circulating.

Avoid Getting Bitten

Keep mosquitoes away from exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks. (it's the middle of summer and hot...maybe read on)

Tuck shirts into pants and pants into socks to cover gaps in your clothing where mosquitoes can get to your skin.

(these last two are recommended to keep ticks off of you)

Use EPA-registered mosquito repellents when necessary and follow label directions and precautions closely.

Replace your outdoor lights with yellow "bug" lights, which tend to attract fewer mosquitoes than ordinary lights. The yellow lights are NOT repellents, however.

Many of you are suffering from allergies, maybe a summer cold. Try this hack.

Need temporary relief from a blocked nose? Try pressing an ice cube against the roof of your mouth for a few seconds.

The cold may help constrict blood vessels and reduce swelling in your nasal passages, making it easier to breathe. It's not a cure, but it can provide short-term relief when you need it most.

(relief or an "Ice cream headache")

Over the weekend, the annual Lumberjack World Championships were held in Hayward, Wisconsin, drawing thousands of cheering fans to watch intense head-to-head woodchopping, logrolling, and speed climbing events. The weekend turned historic when elite female athletes shattered three separate women's world records—including a underhand chop event.

They are lumberjacks and are ok!

Today's Useless Fact of the Day - While people have been eating fried, sugary, and salty snacks for generations, the actual phrase "junk food" didn't enter the mainstream lexicon until the early 1970s. It was popularized by a microbiologist named Michael Jacobson, who used it to describe foods packed with empty calories, fats, and sugars in an effort to curb America's growing appetite for highly processed snacks.
