Big movie up this weekend, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. Based on the classic by Homer (no not Simpson) It is one of the oldest surviving works of literature and remains popular with modern audiences. Like the Iliad, the Odyssey is divided into 24 books. It follows the heroic king of Ithaca, Odysseus, also known by the Latin variant Ulysses, and his homecoming journey after the ten-year-long Trojan War.

Some number facts:

35: The height, in feet, of the Trojan Horses constructed

That’s about the height of a telephone pole. Production has not said exactly how many Trojan Horses there were, but there were more than one.

45: Duration of the 900-foot uphill hike, in minutes, to film the Ithaca scenes

Much of the cast and crew, including Nolan and Emma Thomas, hiked up a rugged hill to Castello di Santa Caterina every day. This is a moderately challenging hike that requires a good level of fitness.

1: Number of times actor John Leguizamo attempted the hike

“I hiked one day. I was like ‘I’m not doing this again,’” Leguizamo said. “I mean, 40 minutes climbing up that 900-foot cliff and then you got to act for 12 hours? No, I took the helicopter.”

$250 million: The reported production budget

But it’s not Nolan’s most expensive film; “The Dark Knight Rises” is. As far as modern production budgets go, this is in the range of a big blockbuster (the live-action “Moana” had the same), though sometimes they balloon. “Jurassic: World Dominion,” released in 2022, is considered one of the most expensive films ever made with a production budget of $531 million, which accounts for tax rebates and incentives.

This year, the #1 search is Gaslighting, followed by Love and Empathy.

In Pennsylvania, it's Metaphor. And in New York, it's Equity.

Today's Useless Fact of the Day

Trees are so common that it’s easy to assume no one has ever counted them. Surprisingly, scientists have. While no one has physically counted every trunk and branch, researchers have combined satellite imagery, artificial intelligence, forest inventories, and more than 400,000 ground-based measurements to estimate the number of trees across our planet.

The answer? About 3.04 trillion trees. Roughly 390 trees for every person on Earth.

Based on historical modeling, researchers estimate Earth has lost around 46% of its trees since the beginning of human civilization.
