1981 Journey released their seventh album Escape written as E5C4P3. Five singles were released, "Who's Crying Now" (#4 Hot 100 and Mainstream Rock), "Don't Stop Believin'" (#9 #8 Mainstream Rock), "Stone In Love" (#14 Mainstream Rock), "Open Arms" (#2), and "Still They Ride" (#19).
"Don't Stop.." was used famously in the finale of The Sopranos, and The Glee cast took the song to #4 on the Hot 100 in 2009.
This was the first album to feature Jonathan Cain from The Baby's. Interesting that John Waite, lead singer turned down the melody for "Open Arms" as "sentimental rubbish." Cain eventually finished the song with Steve Perry but it was almost left off the album as Journey's guitarist Neal Schon reportedly disliked the song because "it was so far removed from anything they had ever attempted to record before". Drummer Steve Smith recalls that Schon noted that it "sounds kinda Mary Poppins", added to which the other members of the band were against the idea of performing ballads.
I really enjoyed listening to this album again.
