Year-End 1971 - 50 Years Ago

The Record Companies, for the most part, shut down late December and early January, which gives us time to say goodbye to our Anniversary years with their #1 songs of the year. Added bonus of the #1 Album of the Year as well.

#1 1971

Single - "Joy to the World" Three Dog Night. #1 for six weeks.

Album - "Jesus Christ Superstar" Soundtrack. The album was #1 in both February and May and actually ranked ahead of Carole King's Tapestry at #2 (and was also #2 in 1972.)

Interesting note, as Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice couldn't get backing for a stage musical, they just produced an album, which led to stage productions.

Yvonne Elliman had a Hot 100 hit (#28 and #15 AC) with this song. (Helen Reddy made #13 and #12 respectfully.)

Murray Head was vocalist on "Superstar" that made #14.
