A recent poll asked about some classic foods we eat on the Fourth.  And not all of them are as universally popular as you'd think:  33% of us hate potato salad . . . 17% think pasta salad is gross . . . 28% wouldn't touch a deviled egg . . . 34% say no to coleslaw . . . and 9% think any red-white-and-blue dish seems gross.

Some foods are more popular:  Only 12% wouldn't eat ribs . . . 9% don't like smoked brisket . . . and just 7% wouldn't eat grilled corn-on-the-cob.

A new Gallup poll found we're less patriotic than we used to be.  Only 39% of us say we're "extremely proud" to be an American.  That's up slightly from 38% last year, but way down from the all-time high of 70% in 2003.

A separate survey looked at how we view the average American compared to when the same poll was done 75 years ago.  We're more likely to say people today are "selfish," "spoiled," "intolerant," and "immoral."  And we're much less likely to describe people as "generous."

It sounds like a lot of Americans rely on auto-correct when texting people about the 4th of July.

A poll on Independence Day asked a simple question: How confident are you in your ability to spell "Independence Day"? One in three people said they have "no idea" how to spell "Independence."

Internet searches for "how to spell independence" skyrocket by 85% during the July 4th holiday weekend.  And that's not the worst part . . . less than 58% of people correctly answered that America gained its freedom from Great Britain.

A company that repairs broken and water-logged phones went through their data, and found there are 48% more phone accidents on the Fourth than any other day of the year.  Memorial Day and Labor Day are next.

They say summer in general is the most dangerous time of year for your phone.  With more people out last year, they saw an 80% jump in water-related phone issues . . . a 10% bump in cracked screens . . . and a 65% increase in lost phones.

Here are a few pieces of advice to keep your phone safe.

1.  Don't assume it's waterproof.  We see stories all the time about phones still working after months at the bottom of a lake.  But that's not always how it goes.  And the type of water matters too.  Water with salt or chlorine is worse.

2.  Add contact info to your home screen.  Take a screenshot of someone in your contacts, and set it as your wallpaper.  So if you lose your phone, whoever finds it can get in touch.  Doing that one thing triples your chances of getting it back.

3.  Get your cracked screen fixed.  It makes phones a lot more susceptible to water damage.  Even just humidity can seep in slowly and cause issues.

Today's Useless Fact of the Day - Three of the first five presidents died on July 4th.  John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4th, 1826 . . . and James Monroe died on July 4th, 1831.
