Towel Day - On the day, fans are to carry a towel to show their appreciation for Douglas Adams and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

From the book -

A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you — daft as a brush, but very very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

Sunday

National Blueberry Cheesecake Day

National Cherry Dessert Day

National Paper Airplane Day

Neighbor Day

World Dracula Day

World Lindy Hop Day

"Consumer Affairs" looked at how much seven barbecue staples cost now compared to 2023, and it's a 10% bump.  $27.39 a year ago, and $30.18 now.

Most of that is because hamburger meat prices are up, but nothing on the list is cheaper than it was in 2023.

They compared data from over 150,000 stores across the country and looked at what you'd need for a basic cookout with burgers and dogs.  Here are all seven items, and what they'll cost the average American this year.

1.  Eight burgers:  $8.07, up 15%.

2.  Burger buns:  $3.06, up 1%.

3.  Eight all-beef hot dogs:  $3.15, no change.

4.  Eight hot dog buns:  $3.09, up 1%.

5.  A 32-ounce bottle of ketchup:  $5.53, up 2%.

6.  A 20-ounce bottle of mustard:  $2.61, up 3%.

7.  A 26-ounce bottle of relish:  $4.67, up 49%. There's a big "pickle shortage" thanks to extreme weather in Mexico. So that might have something to do with it.

Here are a few ways to make sure everyone has a happy and SAFE Memorial Day weekend . . .

1.  Driving.  Triple-A expects a record 38.4 million people on the road this year.  So buckle up, make sure you're well-rested, don't speed, and never drink-and-drive.  (or puff)

2.  Grilling.  Never leave a hot grill unsupervised.  Make sure it's far enough away from buildings, trees, and anything else that could catch fire.  Keep kids and pets away from it.  And never spray lighter fluid on coals that are already hot.

3.  Food safety.  Don't leave food out of the refrigerator for more than two hours.  When the temperature is up over 90, that drops to one hour.  Any longer than that and you risk food poisoning.

4.  Water safety.  Pay close attention to kids when you're around water, never swim alone, and always wear life jackets if you're out on a boat.  This week is National Safe Boating Week specifically because it's right before Memorial Day.

5.  Sun safety.  Today is Don't Fry Day, spelled F-R-Y.  The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention came up with it in 2009 to encourage us to be careful in the sun on Memorial Day, and all summer.

Their four tips are "Slip, Slop, Slap, and Wrap". Slip on a long-sleeved shirt to protect your arms . . . slop on plenty of sunscreen that's SPF 15 or higher . . . slap on a hat to protect your face and neck . . . and wrap on a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from sun damage.

Chris Hemsworth received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday. So, of course, he had to be roasted by the Avengers.

Jeremy Renner said 'absurdly annoyingly amazing.'

"Captain America Chris Evans called him 'second-best Chris.'"

Robert Downey Jr added."Chris is a bit daunting to describe . . .  He has a true-blue wit and he has a depth of soul . . . You keep us Hollywood folks on our toes because you're just a real dude."

and because everything you do in Hollywood is for publicity,

George Miller, who directed him in "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga which opens this weekend, and co-star Anya Taylor-Joy, and Chris' family were also in attendance.

The days of Walter Cronkite are long gone.  No news anchor will ever be that trusted again.  So who do we trust now?  According to a poll by the "Hollywood Reporter", NBC's Lester Holt is as good as it gets.

65% of respondents say they trust him "A Lot" or "Some".  And only 16% said "Not Much" or "Not At All".

As far as his network competition goes, ABC's David Muir was second at 63% / 20% . . . and Norah O'Donnell from CBS came in at 53% / 25%.

Cable news fared worse.  Anderson Cooper from CNN did the best, at 60% / 25%.  Rachel Maddow from MSNBC finished second at 51% / 33%.

Fox News anchor Sean Hannity scored higher in UNTRUSTWORHINESS . . . 45% . . . than trustworthiness, which was only 38%.

Dolly Parton's first album, "Hello, I'm Dolly", came out in 1967.  Fast forward 57 years . . . and now she's working on her 50th album.  This one is rumored to be called, "Dolly Parton: Smokey Mountain DNA".  50 albums, over 57 years, is truly impressive.

News about the 50th album has largely been kept under wraps until her niece, singer Jada Star, recently talked to "The Sun".  She said, "It is an album that documents [Dolly's] whole life.  It has been a huge undertaking which involves the whole family."

More details will be coming soon i'm sure.

The International Dairy Foods Association recently conducted a survey, where 97% of Americans reported "loving" or "liking" ice cream.

They asked people for their favorite flavors, and despite the silly stuff some creameries are doing . . . like mac-and-cheese ice cream . . . America likes the CLASSIC flavors.

Vanilla is #1, followed by Chocolate . . . Strawberry . . . Butter Pecan . . . Cookie Dough . . . Cookies and Cream . . . Mint Chocolate Chip . . . Chocolate Chip . . . Rocky Road . . . and Peanut Butter.

Caramel just missed the Top 10 at #11, followed by Coffee . . . Brownie . . . Moose Tracks . . . Birthday Cake . . . Cherry or Black Cherry . . . Neapolitan . . . Pistachio . . . Banana . . . and Fudge Swirl.

The LEAST popular flavor of the ones they asked about was . . . Lavender.  Others that did NOT get much love include Green Tea, Matcha, Maple, Orange, Spumoni, and Rum Raisin.

HOT FUDGE is America's favorite topping.

Our second favorite topping is whipped cream, followed by caramel sauce . . . chocolate sauce . . . nuts . . . sprinkles . . . chocolate chips . . . and cherries.

They also asked what "container" for ice cream people preferred . . . and waffle cone was the top response.  29% of people would opt for that.  A simple bowl was the runner-up at 27%.  Sugar cones were next, followed by "waffle bowls."

9% of people prefer to eat it straight out of the carton.  7% like putting their ice cream in a cup or mug, and 6% have a thing for "cake cones."
