4/4/26 - Happy Easter!!! Confidence and Social Media Use

Saturday 4/4/26

Sunday 4/5/26 - Easter Sunday!

Christian beliefs of the holiday are coupled with pagan traditions. During pagan times there were spring festivals that celebrated the rebirth of nature—of new vegetation and young animals. This is how eggs and bunnies became associated with the holiday. The day's name is thought to have come from Eostara, also known as Ostara, who was the goddess of rebirth.

A new BC Hydro survey of British Columbians reveals couples are very confident in their own abilities—and not so confident in their partner's. The findings:

Laundry: Nearly 60% believe they're better at it than their partner. Among those, 82% are women—and women are three times more likely to actually do the laundry.

Driving: Men are more than twice as likely to handle most of the driving, and 58% of men believe they're the better driver (compared to just 28% of women).

Dishwasher loading: 19% identify as the "dishwasher perfectionist"—and men are more likely to claim that title. Six percent of couples say they have strong, clashing opinions about the "right" way to load it.

Thermostat wars: 20% of couples admit to arguing daily about temperature settings. Men are 10% more likely to take control, and 77% insist they set it correctly.

Ofcom's new 2026 report on UK media habits reveals a major shift in how adults use social media. The number who actively post, share, or comment has dropped from 61% in 2024 to just 49% in 2026. More adults are now "lurkers" than active participants.

Other key findings:

54% of UK adults now use AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini, rising to 79% among 16-24-year-olds.

12% of AI users (and 19% of 25-34-year-olds) use AI for conversational purposes—including relationship breakup advice and companionship while working from home.

67% admit they spend too much time on their devices, with 40% saying this happens most days.

Trust in news is deeply divided: 19% always trust mainstream media, while 21% always question its accuracy.

As the Artemis II astronauts continue their journey, they're also serving as test subjects for critical health research. The Orion spacecraft carries instruments to measure radiation exposure in deep space—data that will be essential for protecting astronauts on future missions to Mars .

Unlike the International Space Station, which orbits within Earth's protective magnetic field, Artemis II is traveling beyond that shield, into the full radiation environment of deep space. The data gathered will help scientists understand the long-term risks of extended space travel, from cancer to cardiovascular disease.

Correction! (actually April Fools redact)

Reports on April Fools' Day of the death of the world’s oldest living land animal, a 193-year-old tortoise called Jonathan, were greatly exaggerated. Jonathan is still kicking — albeit slowly — on the island of St. Helena.

An account on X, falsely claiming to be by Joe Hollins, a veterinarian who had worked with the reptile, said on Wednesday he was heartbroken to announce Jonathan's death. But Hollins later said on Facebook that he didn't even have an X account.

Guinness World Records lists Jonathan as the oldest living land animal and the oldest tortoise ever. He was believed to be about 50 years old when he was brought to St. Helena in 1882. The island is best known as the place Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to following his defeat by the British at Waterloo in 1815.
