3/9/24 & 3/10/24 - Time Change, Oscars, and Many Many Kangaroos!

Saturday 3/9/24

Sunday 3/10/24

Celebrate:

Amerigo Vespucci Day

Bang-Clang Day - commemorates the Battle of Hampton Roads, a Civil War battle that took place on March 9, 1862. The battle is significant not because of its outcome, but because it marked the first battle between ironclad ships, ushering in a new era of naval warfare. On the Confederate side was the Virginia, formerly the USS Merrimack, and on the Union side was the Monitor.

For the 22nd year in a row, Los Angeles-based marketing company Distinctive Assets is gifting those A-listers swag bags filled to the brim with unique products and luxury travel experiences. Back in 2023, the Oscars offering included items worth $126,000; stars at this year’s event could be in for a greater surprise, though, as the new “Everyone Wins” treasure trove is valued at over $170,000.

Including

a $50,000 trip to the Chalet Zermatt Peak in the Swiss Alps.

the full line of Miage skin-care goodies

a $10,000 micro-needling treatment

a 45-bottle wine fridge from Thor kitchen

other beauty products and treatments

chocolates

sleep aids

a special Rubik’s Cube

Oh..and they are considered taxable income of $62,900.

Daylight Saving Time starts this weekend, so we change the clocks and lose an hour of sleep. The actual time is 2am Sunday morning, but you should change what needs to be changed before you go to bed Saturday night. Here are four other things you should also do this weekend.

1.  Change the batteries in your smoke alarm.  It's a good idea to change the batteries once a year, so doing it the same weekend as changing the clocks is an easy way to stay on top of it.

2.  Restock your emergency kit. If you already have an emergency kit at home, go through it to make sure nothing has expired. If you don't have one, put one together this weekend.

Including, Water (one gallon per person per day for several days, for drinking and sanitation) Food (at least a several-day supply of non-perishable food) Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert.

Also it might be a good idea to have a list of essential numbers and notes.

Check this website our for a full list.

3.  Clean out your fridge, pantry, and medicine cabinet. Toss anything that's expired or you're no longer using, and use up anything that's expiring soon.

4.  Flip your mattress.  Some mattresses should be flipped once or twice a year to avoid irregular wear, and it's easy to remember if you do it the same weekend you change your clocks.

Golfers at The Heritage Golf and Country Club near Melbourne were interrupted by a bizarre sight on March 6. Stunning footage captured the moment hundreds of kangaroos invaded the course, stampeding down the fairway. The stunned golfers could do nothing but wait for the marsupial mob to pass.

Shania Twain got her own Barbie in honor of International Women's Day, and she celebrated by copying Ryan Gosling's classic line from the movie.

In an Instagram post she said, quote, "All I've wanted to do my whole life is tell stories of empowerment, independence and self-expression through my songwriting."

Shania is one of several women getting Barbies, including Viola Davis, Dame Helen Mirren, and Kylie Minogue.

Here's a quick look back at what America was Googling in February

1.  "Who the [Eff] Did I Marry?"  A TikTok series with that name blew up last month.  It's a woman telling the story of how she married a pathological liar.

2.  "What time is the Super Bowl?"  It started at 6:30 PM Eastern and ran longer than usual.  The Chiefs beat the Niners 25-22 in overtime.

3.  "When will AT&T service be restored?"  It went down on the 22nd and lasted almost 12 hours for some people.  Then there was more outrage when AT&T said they'd only be giving customers $5 for the trouble.

4.  "Where Is Kate Middleton?"  She's been recovering from abdominal surgery.  Rumors swirled there might be more to the story, like maybe she was MISSING.  But they got put to bed on Monday when she was spotted driving with her mom.

5.  "Why is gas going up?"  The national average rose 21 cents last month, up to $3.31 a gallon.  But that's not too crazy this time of year.

It's a supply-and-demand thing as we start getting into spring break season.  Then prices rise even more as gas stations switch over to a higher-grade "summer blend" that costs more to make.
