1989 #1 Dance Song - Deep in Vogue - Malcolm McLaren

1989 - #1 Dance song on this date is “Deep in Vogue” by Malcolm McLaren.

History Lesson!

Mark Moore and William Orbit were working on some remixes and ended up sampling the voguing section of the Harlem ball culture documentary movie Paris Is Burning, which Malcolm McLaren had casually given them. The film was unreleased at the time but McLaren had brought a VHS tape of rushes with him along with permission from director Jennie Livingston to sample it.

This was released two years before the film's official release, and was the first to bring 'voguing' to mainstream public attention – it pre-dates Madonna's "Vogue" by eight months before the March 1990 release of Madonna's single.

A rare ambient mix of "Deep in Vogue" by Orbit & Moore is available only on the 1990 CD single and DJ Promo titled 'Opulence – You Own Everything'. (wait a minute.......appalance??  Mercedes Iman Diamond)

If you want to find out more about the ball culture, of course, watch the movie Paris is Burning, and I would recommend the TV show Pose.

The song samples MFSB's "Love is the Message" which is also the sample for Madonna's "Vogue."
