1988 - Green - R.E.M.

35 Years Ago - 1988 R.E.M. released their sixth album Green.

This was their first album for Warner Brothers, a major label, and many thought they had sold out. Actually, they were offered more money from other labels, but they went with WB due to the company's assurance of total creative freedom.

This was an experimental album where they wouldn't write any "REM songs."

"Orange Crush" was the first single and made #1 on the Modern and Mainstream Rock Charts.

"Stand" again was #1 on those charts and made #6 on the Hot 100.

It is meant to be a self-aware "tongue-in-cheek" 1960s-esque bubblegum pop song, meant to resemble the music of The Banana Splits, The Archies, and The Monkees. It was also the theme song for the 1990 FOX Sitcom Get a Life starring Chris Elliott. (but not in reruns or DVD)

"Pop Song 89" peaked at #86 and peaked at #14 Mainstream Rock.

"Get Up" was released but failed to chart.
