1982 Paul McCartney released Tug of War. his eleventh album and his fourth solo album. It was the first after the break up of Wings and the first after the death of John Lennon. The duet with Stevie Wonder Ebony and Ivory was the first single and a seven week #1 smash and the first time he did a duet with another major artist.
"Take It Away" was the next single making #10 (#6 AC #39 Mainstream Rock.) The title track was the last single only making #50 on the Hot 100 and #31 AC.
Interesting note, the video for "Ebony and Ivory" doesn't see the two men in the same room, due to conflicting work schedules, McCartney and Wonder filmed their parts for the song's music video separately. (I guess I never really paid attention to it, but it's plainly obvious.)
Many critics have derided "Ebony...." as "saccharine". In 2007, BBC 6 Music listeners voted "Ebony and Ivory" the worst duet in history.
And let's not forget the classic SNL sketch.
