1978 - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Soundtrack

45 Years Ago - 1978 the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Soundtrack was released.

The brainchild of Robert Stigwood and involved The Bee Gees and Peter Frampton.

It didn't do all that well, in fact, the release made history as being the first record to "return platinum", with over four million copies of it taken off store shelves and shipped back to distributors. Hundreds of thousands of copies of the album ended up being destroyed by RSO.

The only bright spots were hits from Aerosmith and Earth, Wind and Fire.

"Come Together" made #23 on the Hot 100

"Got to Get You Into My Life" was a smash at #9 Hot 100 and #1 R&B (#30 AC.) The song won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s).

Robin Gibb had a hit (lost to the ages..have you heard it lately..or even know it?) #15 and #22 AC.

Billy Preston (sometimes called the fifth Beatle) hit the Hot 100 at #86 with "Get Back."

The film was a minor commercial success, earning $20.4 million against the production budget of $13 million.
