1973 - Lynyrd Skynyrd (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) - Lynyrd Skynyrd

50 Years Ago - 1973 Lynyrd Skynyrd released their self-titled debut album parenthetically (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)

Their name was inspired by a gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, FL.

The album featured two singles.

"Gimmie Three Steps" which didn't chart, and a little song called "Free Bird." The song didn't chart when this album was released. It was after "Sweet Home Alabama" was a hit from their next album that it was released and make #19. A live version charted in 1976 making #38.

It has become something of a humorous tradition for audience members at concerts to shout "Free Bird!" as a request to hear the song, regardless of the performer or style of music.
