A doctor in Wisconsin who beat cancer is planning to ring in the new year with a very big trip.  He's running seven marathons in seven days, on all seven continents.  His first one is in Antarctica January 31st.

He's doing it to raise money for cancer research, but also to inspire people.  He said he doesn't think we set our sights high enough these days.

Pets and Christmas trees can be a bad combo.  Here are four tips to keep your dog or cat safe this month . . .

1.  Get an artificial tree instead of a real one.  Fake trees don't have the same appealing scent, and they don't shed.  Which is good, because pine needles can cause diarrhea and other issues if eaten.

2.  Put the fragile ornaments on higher branches and attach ornaments with ribbons or twist ties to make them more difficult to knock down.  Those metal hangers can become a choking hazard if your dog or cat tries to eat them.

3.  Use cord covers or organizers to keep electrical wires out of sight.  Pets may try to chew on the wires or can get caught on them, knocking the tree over.  And always keep the lights OFF if you're not home.

4.  Cover the water container.  And if you're still not confident your dog or cat will leave the tree alone, put up a pen or fencing around the base of the tree to add an extra layer of protection.

Pantone revealed its "Color of the Year" for 2025, and it's BROWN.  They're calling the specific shade Mocha Mousse, which is a somewhat lighter brown.

Some people are calling it "a win for quiet luxury" . . . other people say it looks a lot like poop.  Or at least the poop emoji.

For the record, Pantone describes it as, "a warming, brown hue imbued with richness.  It nurtures us with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee, answering our desire for comfort."  Maybe it works for you.

But in the comments, some people seemed less than excited.  One person compared it to "sad beige," and others said it was "too boring, dull, and neutral."

Making people feel sorry for bananas is surprisingly easy.  (???)  You've maybe seen this in stores:  Researchers put single bananas out with a sign that said, "We are sad singles.  We want to be bought as well," and sales jumped 58%.  But happy banana signs only caused a 5% bump.

Today's Useless Fact of the Day - A guy named Philip Noel-Baker from England is the only person who's ever won an Olympic medal and received a Nobel Prize.  He won a silver as a runner in the 1500 meters at the 1920 Olympics, then went into politics and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1959.
