There's a myth that the average person gains up to seven pounds over the holidays, but it’s really like a pound or two.

Merriam-Webster’s human editors have chosen slop as the 2025 Word of the Year. We define slop as “digital content of low quality that is produced usually in quantity by means of artificial intelligence.” All that stuff dumped on our screens, captured in just four letters: the English language came through again.

The flood of slop in 2025 included absurd videos, off-kilter advertising images, cheesy propaganda, fake news that looks pretty real, junky AI-written books, “workslop” reports that waste coworkers’ time… and lots of talking cats. People found it annoying, and people ate it up.

Other words that stood out in their 2025 lookup data:

 'gerrymander' maps

 'touch grass' go real world!

'performative' made or done for show

A Florida man caught stealing a car told police he didn't break in, he "teleported" into the seat and then thanked the officers for "saving him from the aliens."

A lighthearted trend on X is asking people to create a "New Name" by combining the first two letters of their Mom's name + the last two letters of their Dad's name. Try it with your listeners!

(nope.....Mary.   I like first two of each though, Maha.)

It’s cold and flu season so be sure to do the vampire when you cough or sneeze. Researchers in the UK (Loughborough University) found that the power of a sneeze or a cough can carry germs like a “mini atomic bomb” and travel for close to a dozen feet.

A Godzilla super fan from the East Bay was able to live out his birthday fantasy after he was gifted a "Godzilla rage room." It was complete with a mini cardboard replica of Tokyo.

His wife posted about the experience on social media, saying it was a "stress outlet" for him after a tough year.

Today's Useless Fact of the Day - One of the most famous ballets in the world, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, premiered on this day in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.

Critics at the time actually hated it. One reviewer called the choreography "confused" and complained that the ballerina was "too fat."
