John Carpenter and Debra Hill wrote "Halloween" (#13 on the Rotten Tomatoes list) in about 10 days and then shot it in 20. The whole budget was $300,000 — not much money even in 1978. They split the writing in half. Hill wrote all the teenage girls' dialogue because she knew how young girls actually spoke. Carpenter wrote the dialogue for Michael Myers and Dr. Loomis.

When production designer Tommy Lee Wallace went to find a mask for the killer, he found 2 options at a costume shop on Hollywood Boulevard. An Emmett Kelly clown mask. And a Captain Kirk mask — William Shatner's face from Star Trek — that cost $1.98. The Kirk mask just stared at you with all the life gone out of it. Wallace widened the eye holes, pulled off the sideburns, and spray-painted it white.
"Halloween" came out October 25, 1978, and made $47 million at the US box office, one of the most profitable independent films ever made.

According to a Ferrero survey, 70% of adults say Halloween is just as much for adults as it is for children. Seventy-five percent say it's an opportunity to enjoy candy without guilt, and 70% believe in the "Halloween parent tax"—the right to at least some of your kids' candy. Sixty-two percent say there should be no age limit for trick-or-treating. So go ahead: dress up, eat candy, and enjoy the spooky season. You're in good company.

Today's Useless Fact of the Day - The Opening of the Erie Canal was today in 1825: The historic 363-mile waterway officially opened in New York State, connecting the Hudson River at Albany to Lake Erie at Buffalo and transforming American trade and transport. News was passed along the entire 363-mile route from Buffalo to New York City using a series of cannons fired sequentially along the canal banks—taking just 80 minutes to relay the message!
