Today is the annual La Tomatina Festival in Buñol, a little village near Valencia, Spain. Participants throw tomatoes and get involved in a tomato fight purely for entertainment purposes. Since 1945 (minus a couple of pandemic years) it has been held on the last Wednesday of August.

It started in 1945 when there was a parade. The energy of the parade caused one participant’s big costume heads to fall off. The parade participant got upset and began hitting everything in his path. La Tomatina historians say “there was a market stall of vegetables that fell victim to the fury of the crowd.” People started to pelt each other with tomatoes.

The following year, some young people engaged in a pre-planned quarrel and brought their own tomatoes from home. Although the police broke it up, this began the yearly tradition.

For the festival, Approximately 120 metric tons of tomatoes are brought in. (so if I do math correctly, that's around a million tomatoes..and no I'm not showing my work.)

Director Denis Villeneuve told Empire he hopes to make one more "Dune" film after "Part Two." The upcoming sequel adapts the second half of Frank Herbert's original 1965 novel, the first half of which was covered in 2021's "Dune." But there's also a second "Dune" book, "Dune Messiah," and Villeneuve hopes to turn this into a third movie. "If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream," he said, teasing that there are already "words on paper" for "Part Three." Villeneuve isn't interested in adapting the "Dune" books after "Messiah," though, noting that they're "more … esoteric

Pumpkin Spice....EVERYTHING!!!

Pumpkin spice BUTT WIPES are now a thing that exist.

The company Dude Wipes is making them . . . and calling them "DUMPkin Spice" wipes.

According to the description, they're designed to, quote, "keep your butt cozy with a pumpkin spice-inspired mix of clove, nutmeg, and other fall scents."

They posted a picture of a pumpkin with the date "9-5-23" carved in it, so we're guessing that's when they officially drop. But you can already buy them on Amazon.

Funny that in 2019 it was a fake photo joke...but now it's real....ugh.

Apparently, a lot of Americans have "controversial" food preferences.

Instacart recently conducted a poll on America's "most polarizing" foods, and anchovies were the most controversial. 50% of people don't like them.

Black licorice was the second-most divisive, followed by: Oysters

beets

blue cheese

okra

capers

Brussels sprouts

fennel

olives

mushrooms

cilantro

coconut

pickles

mayonnaise.

Chances are you might LOVE at least one thing on this list, because 37% of people say they have controversial food preferences, meaning they LOVE something that most people hate, or HATE something most people love.

66% of people say they can't stand a food because of its SMELL. Others say it's:

Too strong of a flavor

the texture

how it looks

the type of flavor (sweet, sour, salty)

how it makes you feel after eating it.

Still, food preferences aren't always forever. 69% of people say they initially disliked a food and later grew to enjoy it.

In a new survey, more than 40% of young adults . . . up through age 40 . . . say they believe marriage is an "outdated tradition." That includes 41% of young men, and 52% of young women.

73% of them say weddings are too expensive these days, and 85% don't think they're necessary to have a fulfilled and committed relationship.

That said, marriages aren't being written off completely. 83% say they hope to marry someday . . . down the road.

A new poll found the average American spends 27 minutes getting ready for bed. Unless we fall asleep first . . . then it's zero minutes.

Falling asleep before doing your nightly routine is common, and young people are the most likely to do it. Here are the most common bedtime blunders . . .

1. Falling asleep while scrolling on your phone. 51% said it happens, including 68% of Gen Zers.

2. Forgetting to brush your teeth or wash your face, 41%. Again, Gen Z tops the list at 53%.

3. Falling asleep without saying goodnight, 39%.

4. Forgetting to turn off the TV or set a timer, 38%.

5. Falling asleep with your clothes on, 37%. 47% of Gen Zers do it.

6. Forgetting to set an alarm, 36%.

7. Falling asleep with the lights on, 35%.

8. Falling asleep with your glasses on, or contacts in. 31% of us sometimes do it.

A new study identified eight habits that can add over TWO DECADES to your life if you adopt them all by age 40, 24 years for men, and 21 years for women.

You're already doing a few of them, hopefully. 24 is just the max compared to someone who does none of them.

Here are the eight things you need to do

1. Exercise.

2. Don't get hooked on opioids or pain pills.

3. Don't smoke.

4. Manage your stress.

5. Eat a mostly plant-based diet.

6. Avoid binge drinking.

7. Get enough sleep.

8. Have friends, and maintain good social relationships.

If you thought we had to worry about Boomers on the staircase, Think again.

A new study out of Purdue University says that among people in their 20s young women are more than twice as likely as young men to get seriously hurt falling down the steps.

This elevated risk is mainly due to wearing high heels and being on phones.

Today's Useless Fact of the Day - eBay originally launched in 1995 as a site called AuctionWeb. "eBay" was short for Echo Bay Technology Group. The media kept referring to AuctionWeb as eBay so the company made the name change official in 1997.
