Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor has died at the age of 56, her family has announced.

In a statement, the singer’s family said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

The acclaimed Dublin performer released 10 studio albums, while her song Nothing Compares 2 U was named the number one world single in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards. Her version of the ballad, written by musician Prince, topped the charts around the globe and earned her three Grammy nominations.

The accompanying music video, directed by English filmmaker John Maybury, consisted mostly of a close-up of O’Connor’s face as she sung the lyrics and became as famous as her recording of the song.

In 1992, she tore up a photograph of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live in an act of protest against child sex abuse in the Catholic Church.

Buzzfeed has a collection of "hot weather hacks" making the rounds online, and like most "hacks," some of them are clever . . . some of them are dumb . . . and very few of them are actually useful. Here are a few:

1. "Buckle your seat belt when you LEAVE your car, so that when you get back in, the metal buckle won't be so hot it'll burn you."

2. "If your home's HVAC system is struggling to keep your house cool, it's possibly a dirty filter."

3. You've probably heard this one: "Make sure your fan is switched to spin COUNTERCLOCKWISE to create a downdraft and push colder air toward you. There's usually a switch at the base."

4. "When you start driving, don't roll down all the windows. Only roll down the driver's and passenger's windows, and the cross breeze will be much stronger." I like the passanger front window, and the driver back window.

5. "If you're wearing sandals, and you have to take them off, put them FACE-DOWN. That way, when you put them back on, your feet won't burn."

6. "Put your suntan lotion in the fridge to enhance its cooling effects."

7. "Put a few plastic bottles three-fourths full of water in the freezer. When the water is frozen, put the bottle in front of a fan and rotate when thawed."

8. "Put a large pot of cool water on the burner OVER your oven vent when the oven is on. It will help keep your kitchen cool in the summer."

9. "It's tempting to keep your windows open when it's hot, but if you have no air conditioning, close all windows and shades that are sun-facing." One person even suggested putting your car's windshield shade over a window.

10. "The easiest way to cool down in high heat is to dunk your shirt in water and then wear it." Of course, it depends where you are, the wet t-shirt look is not always appropriate.

There are more here.

Subway is giving one lucky fan free sandwiches for LIFE . . . if they commit to legally changing their first name to "Subway".

If it's something you're willing to do, you can sign up for a chance to win at SubwayNameChange.com starting August 1st.

As always with these things, it's not really UNLIMITED subs, but it's a lot of them. The winner will get $50,000 worth of Subway gift cards.

If you had one sub a day . . . every day . . . that would last you anywhere from 10 to 20 years, depending on which subs you got.

If you had Subway for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day, it would only last a max of about seven years. But don't worry, because if you're eating cured meats morning, noon, and night . . . you might not live another seven years.

You'll also get $750 to cover the cost of changing your name.

A new study on global transportation preferences has discovered that Americans have a less favorable view of walking than driving.

And, among the 12 countries they looked at, Americans have the LEAST favorable attitudes towards: Traveling by train . . . subway . . . public bus . . . and charter bus. And they had the second-lowest opinion on taxis, only higher than France.

A report released yesterday found that men are really getting into "personal care products." On average, men use 11 products a day now, comparison to just six in 2004, while women use 13 products a day now, compared to 12 in 2004.

ABC's "General Hospital" has found an interesting way to keep coming up with new episodes during the strike: scabs. That's right they're using "temporary writers" to keep the show going.

A "General Hospital" writer who's actually participating in the strike says, quote, "Daytime writers face a unique conflict during strikes. We hate to see [our] characters and storylines handed over to 'writers' who cross the picket line.

"But we're also keenly aware that stopping production could spell the demise of soap operas. My hope is that if you love GH, you'll continue to watch. You can morally support the writers and keep the show [on] the air!"

By the way, actors on daytime shows are not part of the SAG-AFTRA strike, so they can keep on working.

Seawater measured off the tip of Florida hit 100 degrees for the second day in a row. That's tentatively the hottest ever measured and puts the waters in the 100 to 102 range recommended by Jacuzzi for its hot tubs. As rising temperatures weaken and kill more coral around the world, fish lose habitat and coastlines lose their primary shock absorber against damage from waves and hurricanes.

Taylor Swift has another record to add to her collection.

Her 2022 hit Anti-Hero just hit 1 billion streams on Spotify. It marks Swift's fourth song to earn such an achievement. It was also her longest running number one hit on the Billboard 100 after spending eight weeks in the top spot.

I'm finding out that more and more classic shows are being rewatched by their stars and then they do a podcast about them.

I'm listening to Eric McCormack and Sean Hayes rewatch Will and Grace, a friend is listening to a 90210 podcast, and i just learned that Dave Coulier, Uncle Joey on Full House, has a new podcast talking about the episodes.

I wonder what else is out there?
