It peaked at #3 on the Hot 100 and it broke the record for slowest ascension to the top 5 in chart history and held the record for most weeks spent on the Billboard Hot 100 at 87 weeks, a record for 7 years. (#2 Mainstream Top 40 #1 Rock Airplay #1 Alternative #2 Adult Top 40 #2 Mainstream Top 40 and #15 Mix Show Airplay.) It was also #3 for the year end.
