The cover photograph of Springsteen against the American flag was taken by Annie Leibovitz and has appeared on lists of the best album covers ever.
"Dancing in the Dark" was a smash propelled by the video directed by Brian De Palma and that woman pulled from the audience (Courtney Cox) Cox has stated that she was one of many that Springsteen could have selected and that she was secretly hoping to not be picked. The song peaked at #2, (kept out of #1 by Duran Duran "The Reflex" and Prince "When Doves Cry")#1 Mainstream Rock, #7 Club. It also won a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance.
"Born in the U.S.A." it's not the patriotic song many think it is. The song addresses the economic hardships of Vietnam veterans upon their return home, juxtaposed ironically against patriotic glorification of the nation's fighting forces. It peaked at #9, #8 Mainstream Rock.
"I'm on Fire" made #6 Hot 100 and AC.
"I'm Goin' Down" made #9.
"My Hometown" was the seventh single from the album to make the Top Ten at #6, #1 AC, #6 Album Rock Tracks.
