12/14/23 - Nostalgia, Film Registry, and Zac Efron

Thursday 12/14/23

Celebrate:

Free Shipping Day

Monkey Day

National Biscuits and Gravy Day

National Bouilabaisse Da

National Screwdriver Day

Roast Chestnuts Day

The National Film Registry is housed at the Library of Congress, which since 1988 has selected movies for preservation based on their cultural and historic importance.

This year “Apollo 13,” and “Home Alone,” are both being honored  along with sci-fi sequel “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” the Disney animated classic “Lady and the Tramp,” and the searing, Oscar-winning drama “12 Years a Slave.” one of the newest from 2013 along with the Oscar-winning documentary “20 Feet From Stardom,” about backup singers, and just in time for the holidays, “The Nightmare Before Christmas."

The oldest film is from 1921: “A Movie Trip Through Filmland,” a very early look at the impact of movies.

Even Madonna makes it in this year as the Susan in “Desperately Seeking Susan” (1985): Susan Seidelman’s uniquely New York saga featuring Rosanna Arquette.

It's a rough time of year to be an Amazon driver.  So help 'em out by NOT ordering this stuff online. A driver named Jennifer Lewis is blowing up on TikTok after listing the top things she hates to deliver.

Basically, it's anything that's really heavy.  She wishes we'd just go buy that stuff ourselves. But there are a few things she sees a lot. Here are her top three . . .

1.  Kitty litter. It doesn't take long to go through it, so people are constantly ordering it on Amazon now. She wishes you'd just pick it up at the grocery store.

2.  Dog food. Again, those bags can weigh 30, 40, or even 50 pounds. And it's something you can get at grocery stores or Petco.

3.  Bottled water. Amazon sells 40 packs, and they're not light.  It's another thing you can get yourself at a grocery store or Sams.

On a typical day, Amazon drivers deliver up to 350 packages.  So if you do order water, at least leave a bottle on the porch for them to take.  If they brought you lots of boxes this year, maybe even think about a holiday tip.

A new survey asked people "what ignites the most nostalgia during the holiday season," and the #1 response was: Spending time with loved ones.

Decorating the Christmas tree was a close second, followed by seeing holiday lights . . . holiday music . . . holiday movies . . . baking cookies . . . cooking holiday meals . . . receiving a holiday card . . . and vintage decorations.

And some holiday traditions might ONLY be done for the sake of nostalgia.

In the same survey, 22% of people admit that they probably spend more time planning and putting up their decorations than they do actually relaxing and enjoying them.

I've mentioned a few of the words of the year, but I ran across an article from ABC News about words from around the world.

South Africa has a word on just how overwhelming things have gotten with multiple controversies occurring at the same time - Kuningi - which means It's a lot.

In the world of religion, Nonbelievers are now Nones.

An Australia Dictionary did a word of the month.

One was Murder Noodle for Snake..in the vein of Fart Squirrel for a Skunk.

Another was Password Child. It refers to a child seen as favored over siblings because their name is used in parents’ passwords.

Netflix has been notoriously tight-lipped about its viewer data . . . but yesterday, they revealed their most-watched content from the first half of the year.

Here are the Top 10, by hours viewed:

1.  "The Night Agent" Season 1:  812.1 million hours.

2.  "Ginny & Georgia" Season 2:  665.1 million hours.

3.  "The Glory" Season 1:  622.8 million hours.

4.  "Wednesday" Season 1:  507.7 million hours.

5.  "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story":  503 million hours.

6.  "You" Season 4:  440.6 million hours.

7.  "La Reina del Sur" Season 3:  429.6 million hours.

8.  "Outer Banks" Season 3:  402.5 million hours.

9.  "Ginny & Georgia" Season 1:  302.1 million hours.

10.  "FUBAR" Season 1:  266.2 million hours.

Ozzy Osbourne says his reality show "The Osbournes" wasn't different from their regular life because it wasn't scripted.  It aired on MTV for four seasons from 2002 to 2005.

Quote, "What they call reality TV now is really not reality.  What they do now is kind of scripted reality.  It's not raw . . . With our show, what you saw was what really went on.  It wasn't contrived . . .

"We didn't become the Osbournes that you see just for the show.  That's the way we are, and all they did was take funny bits out of it."

Ozzy also said he was ready to end the show once the producers at MTV started to ask them to do things they normally wouldn't do.  Quote, "At that point, I lost interest in it."

Really Ozzy?? Who throws ham at the neighbors?

Zac Efron just got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. and is getting great reviews for his new movie The Iron Claw.

He of course thanked his High School Musical folks.

Efron took a moment to acknowledge someone who was missing at Monday's ceremony: "Friends" star Matthew Perry, who died unexpectedly in October.

Perry was "so kind and generous with me while we worked on '17 Again,'" said Efron, who played a younger version of the late actor in the 2009 film.

Collaborating with Perry and the movie's director, Burr Steers, "really pushed me into the next chapter of my career. And for that, thank you so much, Matthew," he added. "Thinking about you a lot today."

A couple in New York state named Tim and Grace Gay hold the record for most Christmas lights on a residential property.  Back in 2012, they put up over 346,000 lights.  Then they beat their own record in 2014 with over 600,000 lights.

Thousands of people visit their house every December in Lagrangeville, New York, just outside Poughkeepsie.  They use it as a fundraiser for local charities, and they've raised close to $700,000 over the years.

But now they're dealing with a growing distaste among their neighbors, who are SICK OF IT.  The lights are VERY bright, there's an endless line of cars, and they blast music through big speakers.

They say it includes over 720,000 lights, 1,700 strobes, and a playlist with 255 songs.  They opened the day after Thanksgiving, and it runs through December 28th.

Tim and Grace don't plan to do it forever.  They say they'll stop once they hit a grand total of $1 million in donations.

A woman in Wyoming filled her entire town with snowmen for the holidays this year.  But they're made of wood, not snow.

Her name is Pauline Parker.  She enjoys making snowman decorations you put out on your lawn.  So she decided to make one for every person in her small town of Burlington, Wyoming.

The official population is just over 300 people, and her last official count was 316 snowmen.  It sounds like it's getting closer to 400 at this point. But either way, her town has more snowmen than people now.

She's been making them since July, and neighboring towns have started asking for them too.  She says it really seems to be bringing people together.

A TikToker who calls himself the "Therapy Gecko" is in the news.  He takes calls while dressed as a lizard (with full green face paint) and helps people with their problems. He says they range from serious relationship issues to questions about quote "pooping their pants".

If you've heard of him before, you're not alone.  He's managed to rack up over 2.5 million followers on TikTok.  He's even interviewed celebrities like Eric André and Lil Yachty while they were ALSO dressed as geckos.

He is not a licensed therapist..he's a comedian.

He's in the news after a station in his hometown of Owings Mills, Maryland did a big story on him. They're obviously very proud.

Today's Useless Fact of the Day - Stephen Hawking is the only person who's ever played themselves on an episode of "Star Trek".  He was on an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" playing poker against holograms of other great scientists.
