Backpack (Bear89), a "gentle giant" of a brown bear, has been declared the winner of Alaska's Fat Bear Week. The annual competition celebrates the bears of Katmai National Park as they prepare for hibernation.

Backpack is the son of former Fat Bear Week champion Holly, who introduced him to the Brooks River when he was a first-year cub in 2006. His name was inspired by his habit of climbing onto his mother's back when they swam the river.

Bear 190 was the runner-up.

Chunk or Bear 32 last year's winner, didn't make it out the first round this year.

A new nuclear diamond battery technology could power 150 million sensors—from deep mines to bridges. The battery stores small amounts of energy from nuclear decay and uses it to transmit sensor data over long periods without replacement. For infrastructure monitoring and remote sensing, this could be a game-changer. Think sensors that last decades without maintenance

WE can do this, but you can't make a microwave that keeps the time correctly!

You have been appointed Minister of Minor Inconveniences. You cannot fix healthcare, housing or wages. But you CAN permanently eliminate one tiny annoyance from society. What the internet said:

Cereal bags need zipper closures.

All printers use the same style ink cartridge!

Physical buttons on car dashboards instead of touchscreens.

When your sock starts falling down inside your shoe.

When you're rushing to get somewhere and start hitting every single red light.mmmmmmmm m

When you get comfy in bed and then desperately need to pee.

When you plug in a USB and somehow get it wrong twice before it finally goes in.

I am sure we all have experienced having to stick a leg out of the blanket because it is too cold not to have a blanket, and too hot to have one as well. - making it being able to sleep at the perfect temperature.

The Cup Noodles Museum in Yokohama, Japan, is dedicated to the history of instant noodles and the inventions of Nissin Foods founder Momofuku Ando. Ando invented Chicken Ramen, the world’s first instant noodles, in 1958, and introduced Cup Noodles in 1971. The museum includes historical exhibits, a theater featuring a film about Ando and his inventions, and hands-on attractions where visitors can make or customize their own instant noodles.

A homeowner in Kenya returned from a weekend trip to find hundreds of strangers swarming his property. His wife had cooked dinner on a charcoal stove, causing soot to form a shape on the wall that neighbors swore looked like a religious apparition. Fed up with the uninvited crowds blocking his yard, the homeowner took a sledgehammer and reduced his entire kitchen to rubble.

Today's useless Fact of the Day - 1970: The Public Broadcasting Service officially went on the air, beginning its mission to provide educational, cultural, and high-quality non-commercial programming to American households.

In a related note, a year earlier 1969, the BBC aired the very first episode of the iconic British surreal sketch comedy series Monty Python's Flying Circus. Which I watched on PBS as a kid.

The name "Monty Python" didn't mean anything. The group came up with it when they were commissioned by the BBC for their television series, thinking it sounded like a sleazy theatrical agent.
