Did July seem hot to you?

Yes, and it's official. Europe's climate monitoring organization says last month was Earth's hottest on record, by a lot.

The global average was 62.5 degrees Fahrenheit, six-tenths of a degree higher than the previous record set in 2019 (typically records are broken by hundredths or a tenth of a degree). Scientists point out that the heat itself is not the biggest worry — they are more concerned that it likely won't be the record for long.

After soaring to new heights when it came to remote work during the pandemic, even video communications company Zoom wants its workers back in the office. Joining a growing number of companies across America instituting return mandates, the San Jose, California-based business wants its own employees back in the office – at least part time. Calling it a hybrid approach "most effective for Zoom," a company spokesperson said Tuesday that employees who live near an office must work in person at least twice a week.

Are you someone who doesn't mind having the subtitles ON . . . or do you find them too distracting? Well, it sounds like MOST people turn them on occasionally, even if they know the language AND don't have hearing issues.

In a new survey, 66% of people say they turn their TV subtitles ON at least occasionally . . . with 13% saying they ALWAYS have them on.

There are a lot of reasons people do this, the two most popular are: "Enhanced comprehension" (27%) and to help understand accents (26%).

That's like adding subtitles to understand thicker English accents on British shows, or even regional American accents, especially Appalachian, Southern, and South Boston.

22% of people like to have subtitles on in noisy places. And other reasons include: Hearing difficulties . . . to avoid disturbing others . . . learning a new language . . . "sound sensitivity" . . . and to make it easier to multi-task.

The reasons people DON'T like subtitles include: They're distracting and don't always match the words being spoken . . . they move too fast or slow . . . they can clutter the screen . . . and they're "inconvenient to turn on."

When it comes to watching shows in a different language, subtitles are more than twice as popular as "dubbed" audio.

The survey also had a few other fun stats, like:

8% of us think today's movies and shows don't have enough sexy scenes.

Only 37% of us think the sex scenes we see are realistic.

And 43% of us say sex scenes are "rarely" or "never" important to the story.

Stop watching those stupid home improvement shows, because all they do is make you feel bad.

First of all, they give you a false impression of how CHEAP it is to totally transform your living space. They also make it seem quick and easy.

Even when they run into a seemingly catastrophic roadblock, like mold inside a wall, they somehow just solve it, usually between a pair of commercial breaks. It NEVER happens like that in real life.

And while the stuff they do looks great, it's often superficial, made from low-quality workmanship and cheap materials.

These shows also give people increased anxiety about the attractiveness of their own homes. And, once again, doing something about it is way more expensive and time-consuming than these shows make it seem.

Today’s Useless Fact of the Day - The guy who invented the USB wanted it to be flippable, but that doubled the cost, so we got USB devices that only plug in one way. And always, somehow, the opposite of the way you try to plug them in on your first try.
