In 2020, nearly 340,000 people died from rectal cancer. Now a new treatment giving hope for beating the disease — and maybe other forms of cancer as well — could be available within a year.

A recent trial, conducted by researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and published in the New England Journal of Medicine on June 5, produced results that are all but unheard of: 14 out of 14 patients are in remission for up to two years after treatment. Four others are still undergoing treatment

Even better, the drug, dostarlimab, has shown no side effects or downsides — unlike other treatments.

Of course more testing and a bigger sample group are needed, but it's a nice breakthrough.

Julee Cruise, the singer, multi-instrumentalist, actor, and longtime collaborator of David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti, died yesterday by suicide, Cruise’s husband Edward Grinnan tells Pitchfork. Grinnan also wrote a commemorative post for Cruise on Facebook. “She left this realm on her own terms,” he wrote. “No regrets. She is at peace.… I played her [the B-52’s song] ‘Roam’ during her transition. Now she will roam forever.” Speaking on the phone with Pitchfork, Grinnan remarked, “She was the most creative person I ever met, and I think I married her for that creativity.” Julee Cruise was 65 years old.

This is a big song from Twin Peaks.

The company that wanted to hire someone to smell their dogs poop for two months now wonders if someone would eat dog food for a week.

A vegan dog food company in the U.K. called Omni is going to pay someone 5,000 about $6,200 to only eat dog food for a week.

The whole point is to show it's good enough for humans to eat.

In addition to eating dog food, there are a few more job requirements to mention. It sounds like they want you to record a few videos for social media. And you have to share info about your energy level and bowel movements throughout the week.

What's an umbrella for? Keeping you dry right? well....Gucci and Adidas are catching heat after teaming up for a $1,300 umbrella that doesn't protect you from the rain. Gucci says it's meant for "sun protection or decorative use" and isn't waterproof.

If you've got $1,300 to waste, you can join the waitlist at Gucci.com. It doesn't go on sale until next month.

Jonathan Searle was a child actor in the original "Jaws" back in 1975. And now, he's the police chief of Oak Bluffs, which is on Martha's Vineyard . . . where "Jaws" was filmed.

Searle was part of a key scene in the movie. He and his real-life brother Steven played the two kids who caused a mass panic by swimming around with a fake fin.

Searle was born on the Vineyard and he's been a cop since 1986.

And here's the best part: He once dealt with a shark hoax from the other end.

In 2008, some guy reported two huge great whites swimming in the waters off Martha's Vineyard. Searle investigated, and determined the guy was LYING. He was charged with disorderly conduct.

If you had to guess, who do you think lies about the amount of calories they eat: People who are carrying a few extra pounds . . . or people who are thin?

Well according to a new study, EVERYONE fibs, and we're sweeping a lot of calories under the rug. They found that the average person packs away about 900 more calories every day than they admit to.

900 calories is basically: Three McDonald's cheeseburgers . . . or five beers . . . or seven little bags of chips . . . or 18 apples . . . or 300 cherry tomatoes.

So what are people drinking these days?

According to an alcohol delivery service, tequila could be huge this summer. They say it's already trending 7% ahead of whiskey, which is also popular.

The #1 drink that Americans say they want to try the most is: Tequila-based cocktails-in-a-can. 43% of people are looking to try those.

In general, ready-to-drink cocktails are surging in popularity, so less people are making their own mixed drinks at home.

Non-alcoholic drinks are popular with Millennials and Gen Z . . . because they're looking for a "healthier lifestyle" with less calories and sugar.

The younger generations are also willing to spend more on premium liquors for casual get-togethers, while Boomers are cool with the cheap stuff.

Today's Useless Fact of the Day - Colt 45 malt liquor isn't named after the .45-caliber Colt handgun. It was named after a running back on the Baltimore Colts in 1963. His name was Jerry Hill and he wore number 45.
