3/20/23 - Happy Spring!

Monday 3/20/23

Celebrate:

The First Day of Spring - 5:24pm is the Vernal Equinox and the start of Spring.

There are many ways people around the world celebrate the change of season, here are some from Reader's Digest.

If you’ve ever seen photos of men and women dancing beneath clouds of colorful powder, you’ve probably seen pictures of Holi. This Indian spring festival sometimes called “the festival of love,” takes place just before the turn of the seasons. It brings entire communities together for one giant party. A bonfire is lit before the festival, then the rest of the celebration is spent dancing and playing with water and colorful powders. It is an explosion of joy and color.

Thailand’s national new year’s celebration occurs shortly after the spring equinox. Revelers all over the islands and cities celebrate by throwing water everywhere and on everyone. CNN has called it “the world’s biggest water fight.”

Loud music and dance parties in the street are an added bonus.

Bulgarians acknowledge springtime before it even arrives. On March 1st, they exchange “Martenitsi” (singular: Martenitsa), red-and-white twined bracelets and decorations. Bulgarians wear the bracelets or pin the decorations to their clothes in anticipation of the change of season. Whenever people see the first stork in the sky or blossom on a fruit tree—usually around the first day of spring—they take off the Martenitsi and tie them to the blooming branch. As flowers unfurl and springtime begins, you can see red-and-white strings tied up in gardens and parks all across Bulgaria.

At the beginning of spring, Bosnians in the town of Zenica celebrate Cimburijada, which literally means “the festival of scrambled eggs.” Residents of the city gather together around giant pots of breakfast food. They break bread—and eggs—together in the park and in picnic spots by the river.

The Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb Sweeping Day, is meant to mark the change of the seasons while honoring ancestors. It will be held on April 4th this year, a few weeks after the first official day of spring. During this festival, Chinese families clean and decorate their ancestors’ tombs. Some people burn incense or light firecrackers at the graves, as well. But this holiday isn’t all about death and solemnity. Families also light beautiful lanterns at night and fly kites to enjoy the sunshine and crisp spring weather.

There's apparently a trend of gym bros on social media eating dog food . . . just for the high levels of protein.

One of them is a "fitness influencer" named Henry Clarisey. He tried a bowl of "Kibbles 'n Bits Oven Roasted Beef, with Spring Vegetable and Apple Flavors."

He couldn't handle it, and spit some of it out. He told his followers, "it's not worth it." He later said, "It tasted extremely dry. I needed so much water after eating it. It tasted like little pieces of dirt."

Now that the idea is trending others are posting videos . . . but for now, it seems like more people are doing it for attention than as an ACTUAL source of protein.

Calling customer service is one of the most annoying things we do in life. And rest assured, those agents are annoyed with US too. Here are three mistakes people make while on the phone with customer service.

1. Going in hot, or being rude in general. Remember, the person you're talking to is just doing their job, and they're not really the one you're mad at. So at a minimum, try to be polite.

Being rude right off the bat also just isn't a great strategy in general. You need them on your side, so they WANT to help you. If you're a jerk, they'll just do the bare minimum.

2. Not being prepared. Before you call, think about things you'll need to have ready, like dates and account numbers. They appreciate that, and they'll be more likely to do what they can to help.

3. Being completely unwilling to compromise. Maybe you want a refund, but they offer you a credit. Sometimes it makes sense to just quit while you're ahead and be done with it.
