1996 The Beastie Boys released their debut album Licensed to Ill. It became the first rap album to top the Billboard chart and one of Columbia Records fastest selling debut albums to date. The tail number printed on the plane of "3MTA3" reads "EATME" when looked at in a mirror or in reverse.
"Brass Monkey" was the first song to show up on the Hot 100 making #48, and of course "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)" made #7.
The song was intended as an ironic parody of "party" and "attitude"-themed songs, such as "Smokin' in the Boys Room" and "I Wanna Rock". However, the irony was lost on most listeners. Mike D commented that, "The only thing that upsets me is that we might have reinforced certain values of some people in our audience when our own values were actually totally different. There were tons of guys singing along to 'Fight for Your Right' who were oblivious to the fact it was a total goof on them.
