1973 - The Payback - James Brown

50 Years Ago - 1973 James Brown released his 37th album The Payback.

It was supposed to be a soundtrack for Hell Up in Harlem but was rejected by the producers for..not being funky enough.

The first single was "Stone to the Bone" and peaked at #4 on the R&B chart and #58 Hot 100.

The title track was #1 on the R&B chart and #26 on the Hot 100.

This is a favorite track for samples, including En Vogue, LL Cool J, Guy, Mary J Blige, SWV, and Biggie to name just a few.
