Thursday 10/31/24

Celebrate:

Halloween!!!!

Samhain - Believed to have Celtic pagan origins, the early literature says Samhain was marked by great gatherings and feasts and was when the ancient burial mounds were open, which were seen as portals to the Otherworld. Some of the literature also associates Samhain with bonfires and sacrifices.

Yesterday was National Candy Corn Day.

Every year, 35 million pounds of Candy Corn are consumed worldwide. That's about 9 billion pieces.

According to a recent poll, 57% of Candy Corn fans eat the whole piece in one bite . . . 28% start with the narrower white tip . . . while 15% begin with the wider yellow end.

Social Media weighs in:

I love Halloween season bcs I can find out who dislikes candy corn and then get rid of them I don't need that kinda negativity in my life

How many pieces of candy corn can you eat before you start thinking, "Is this what eating a candle would be like"?

FACT: Candy corn is made out of melted down traffic cones.

Stockpiling my strength to buy several tons of half price candy corn tomorrow for next year because it tastes better aged.

It's Halloween, so there's a lot of spooky stuff happening, so go ahead and scream!

In a new survey, more than half of Americans say they believe screaming positively affects their health . . . and young adults say the louder they scream the better they feel.  Older adults don't necessarily agree with that.

Despite the relief, only 10% of people say they scream at least once a week.  Women are more likely to say they scream out of FEAR . . . while men are more likely to scream out of PAIN.

There is some science behind screaming being healthy . . . with psychiatrists saying that screaming can release positive chemicals in your brain, and it can have cathartic effects that reduce stress.  But other experts say there's little evidence that screaming provides long-term mental health benefits.

History shows that taphophobia, or the fear of being buried alive, has some degree of merit.  There were stories of it happening enough that "safety coffins" were patented during the 18th and 19th centuries.

One had a BELL above ground that a person could ring from below . . . if they suddenly came back to life.  (This was mostly during the cholera epidemic when people worried that they could be mistaken for being dead.)

By the way, When you die, the last sense to leave your body is the ability to hear.

37% of people who hand out candy say they make sure they buy popular candy to protect their reputation as a good house to hit on Halloween.

But the real question is...do you buy candy you like so you can enjoy (or have enjoyed) it if it doesn't go. Or stuff you don't like so you won't eat it and just take it to work tomorrow.

A poll for Halloween looked at the most common nightmares we have.  And waking up late made the Top 10 . . .

1.  Falling.  65% have had a nightmare about falling from a significant height.

2.  Being chased, 63%

3.  Dying, 55%

4.  Feeling lost, 54%

5.  Feeling trapped, 52%

6.  Being attacked, 50%

7.  Missing an important event, 44%

8.  Waking up late, 43%

9.  A loved one passing away, 36%

10.  Being injured, 35%

A third of us have also had a bad dream about our teeth falling out.  And around one in four have had a nightmare about their spouse leaving them.

I used to have what I called the Radio Stupid dream when I was stressed about something coming up. Either I didn't know how to work the equipment, usually, it was about it falling apart or not working. You might have something similar with your job.

After you binge on Halloween candy, go eat a bunch of sauerkraut. Experts say fermented foods like sauerkraut can help rebalance your microbiome.  That's the delicate balance of good bacteria in your gut that helps you digest and keeps your immune system strong.

Not a fan of sauerkraut? Try yogurt, kimchi, and kombucha.

Some say there are "red" states and "blue" states . . . but according to new research, there's also DOG states and CAT states.

A study looked at Google Trends data, and determined that Colorado and Washington are two of the most "pet-obsessed" states in America . . . at least, judging by their search histories.

The most dog-obsessed states are:  Colorado . . . Ohio . . . North Carolina . . . Florida . . . Pennsylvania . . . Arizona . . . Illinois . . . Indiana . . . Utah . . . Washington . . . and California.

The most cat-obsessed states are:  Washington . . . Pennsylvania . . . Oregon . . . Ohio . . . Massachusetts . . . Minnesota . . . Indiana . . . Wisconsin . . . Michigan . . . and Colorado.

Today's Useless Fact of the Day - Mexico's "Island of the Dolls" . . . a.k.a. "La Isla de las Muñecas" . . . is supposedly one of the most haunted places on Earth.

Legend has it the island's caretaker found a girl who drowned in mysterious circumstances.  The next day, he discovered a doll floating in the water, and he hung it from a tree.  The young girl's spirit haunted the island, and to appease her, the caretaker kept hanging dolls from the trees . . . until his death in 2001.
