"Six degrees of separation" is the claim that anyone on Earth is no more than six social connections away from anyone else. And a group of mathematicians just found that six really is the sweet spot.

They found every new friend you add comes with an upside and a downside. The upside is your social network expands. But at some point, adding new friends weakens your other connections, and old friends start falling away.

They say it doesn't just apply to people though. For example, it also works with viruses like COVID. Quote, "Within six infection cycles, a virus can cross the globe."

What do you call your Grandparents? Taking Grandma and Grandpa out of the equation, 1,500 Americans were polled and the most popular nicknames in 2023 are Nana and Papa.

Also it depends on where you live.

-Granny and Granddad topped the list in lots of states, especially in the South

-Gram and Gramps are big in Maine, New Hampshire, Alaska, Washington, and Wyoming

-Pop-Pop is the top nickname for grandfathers in seven states.

-Abuela and Abuelo ranked first in states like California and Texas with big Spanish-speaking populations

-Paw-Paw and Mamaw are in a few states.

-Hawaii, Virginia, and Vermont are the only states that opt for the more formal Grandmother. Rhode Island is the only state where Grandfather is #1.

Others, Dedushka (russian), Oma (german), Nanny and Bubbe (yiddish.) (Bubby)

The poll also asked people who their FAVORITE grandparent is and by almost a three-to-one margin, it's grandmas.

44% said their mom's mom

23% said their dad's mom

15% said their mom's dad

11% said their dad's dad.

The remaining 7% said "other."
