Update
Movie and TV production nationwide will effectively shut down on Monday unless a deal between the studios and the production workers union. IATSE said its 60,000 union workers will walk off the job at midnight on Oct. 18 if a new collective bargaining agreement isn’t agreed upon by then. The union says the boom in streaming is making for exhausting schedules and that profits aren’t extending to those behind the scenes.

The robot "dogs" with no heads really creep me out...well now...host Robotics and SWORD International have teamed up to create a rifle-toting "robot dog." Called the Special Purpose Unmanned Rifle, or SPUR, the system adds a 6.5mm Creedmoor rifle from SWORD to one of Ghost Robotics' quadrupedal unmanned ground vehicles, or Q-UGVs.

Binge watching and need to go to bed? Stop mid-episode. They always end on an irresistible cliff hanger, but it's really easy to stop at a dull bit in the middle of an episode.

At 90 years old, actor William Shatner became the oldest person to go to space yesterday, proof that only Forbes cares about young people doing stuff.
Shatner had a lot to say following his 10-minute space visit aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard spacecraft. Here are the most wholesome quotes of the bunch:
“I hope I never recover from this. I hope that I can maintain what I feel now. I don't want to lose it. ...It has to do with the enormity and the quickness and the suddenness of life and death. Oh my god, it’s unbelievable."
“The moment you see the vulnerability of everything; it’s so small. This air, which is keeping us alive, is thinner than your skin.”
“Everybody in the world needs to do this. Everybody in the world needs to see.”
(yea..unlikely at $450,000 a ride)
The most amazing thing to me was the booster rocket landing back on the launch pad. Here's a "supercut" video of the whole thing.

New Zealand’s bird of the year competition has been hit with a flurry of controversy, after a species of native bat was granted entry into the polls.
Candidates for the beloved annual election released today included shock newcomer the long-tailed bat, or pekapeka-tou-roa. It is the first time a New Zealand native land mammal has been included in the competition, which has been running for 16 years.
A spokesperson from conservation organisation Forest & Bird, Laura Keown, said allowing bats to enter was not a public-relations rehabilitation job after the winged mammals were implicated in creating a global pandemic.
Keown said allowing bats entry was an attempt to raise their profile as a critically endangered species.

The Christchurch City Council will stop paying The Wizard $16,000 a year after more than two decades on the public payroll to “provide acts of wizardry” for the city.
The Wizard of New Zealand, also known as Ian Brackenbury Channell, said the council had decided to stop paying him because he did not fit with the modern image of the city. Over his 23 years on the payroll, the council has paid him a total of $368,000.
“They are a bunch of bureaucrats who have no imagination,’’ he said.
“They are not thinking of ways to promote Christchurch overseas. They are just projecting an image of bureaucrats drinking lattes on the boulevard.
“Since 2017, this contract has been administered by ChristchurchNZ, when it took over city promotional work from the council.”
The Wizard said he would keep up his regular appearances at Christchurch’s Arts Centre, chatting to tourists and locals.
“It makes no difference. I will still keep going. They will have to kill me to stop me.”
For many years The Wizard would appear in Cathedral Square, giving speeches from a stepladder.
He said he was disappointed that he was no longer being used to help promote the city.
“I would like to know what the reason is for it.
