Wednesday 5/29/24

Celebrate:

End of the Middle Ages Day - Many historians consider May 29, 1453, to be the date on which the Middle Ages ended. It was on this date that Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, fell to the Ottoman Empire, after being under siege for almost two months

Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day - In the early 1900s, people would put pieces of cloth or linen in their larders, with hopes that this would bring good fortune and prosperity, in the form of a plentiful amount of food, as well as fertility. The cloth was usually torn from something in their bedroom, such as a blanket or gown. Eventually, refrigerators began to replace larders. The cloth tradition was lost, but here is it's replacement.

Kevin McCallister's house from "Home Alone" hit the market for $5.25 million.

It's located in a suburb of Chicago and has five bedrooms and six bathrooms.

The outside of the house still looks just like it did in the movie, but the inside has been renovated.  It has a movie theater room with a "Home Alone" poster and large Kevin Lego figure.  It also has a basketball court in the basement.

But watch out for Booby Traps!

The USPS is asking people with standalone, curbside mailboxes to replace them with larger, JUMBO ones.

They want to be able to jam more PACKAGES inside.

They say it's to reduce the "need for notices-left and trips to the Post Office to retrieve a package."  But let's be honest, it's also to save postal workers the time and effort of dropping them off at your doorstep . . . especially in rural areas.

The USPS recommends one with the CLASSIC shape, but with a LOT of room.  They say it should be about 14 inches wide . . . 16 inches deep . . . and 12 inches high.  That's larger than a square foot.

They aren't selling them directly . . . but they suggested ones at retailers like Lowe's, Home Depot, True Value, and Walmart.  Prices range from $65 to $100.

A woman in Virginia named Tierra Barley just won $50,000 by playing a set of lottery numbers she got from a fortune cookie.

A 70-year-old flamingo named Gertrude just laid her very first egg.  The director of her nature preserve in England says she'd been "unlucky in love" but recently started shacking up with a flamingo named Gil who's 33 years younger.

They don't know if the egg will hatch or not but say it's been a "fantastic experience" for her either way.  70 is old for a flamingo.  They usually live to around 40.

Today’s Useless Fact of the Day - The air in a bag of potato chips is actually nitrogen, not oxygen . . . it keeps the chips from going stale.
