1987 Prince released his ninth album Sign o' the Times. The album's songs were largely recorded during 1986 to 1987 in sessions for releases Prince ultimately aborted: Dream Factory, the pseudonymous Camille, and finally the triple album Crystal Ball. The Camille project saw Prince create an androgynous persona primarily singing in a higher, pitched female-sounding voice.

"U Got the Look" w/Sheena Easton (#2) This song was backed with "Housequake.", and "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" (#10.) This was backed with "Hot Thing" which received enough airplay by DJs to chart on its own, reaching No. 63.
