40 Years Ago - 1983 UB40 released their fourth album Labour of Love.
The album had one single in America, the cover of "Red Red Wine" by Neil Diamond.
This album is all cover versions.
In 1983 it went unnoticed in America. It wasn't until 1988 when the band performed the song at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Concert. Soon after, program director Guy Zapoleon of Phoenix-based KZZP placed the full version, including Astro's "rap", on the station's playlist, and it soon became the station's most popular song.
This is when the song went to #1.
