1973 (October) - R&B and Jazz Releases

I have so many releases that I'm taking 1973 and doing an extra post on Sundays to cover the amazing album that came out.

Today - R&B and Jazz


Barry White released his second album Stone Gon'.

Two singles were released with "Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up? peaking at #7 on the Hot 100 and #2 on the R&B chart. (#40 AC)

The Follow-up "Honey Please, Can't Ya See" peaked at #44 but reached #6 on the R&B chart.





Gladys Knight and the Pips released their eleventh album Imagination.

The album had four singles.

"Where Peaceful Waters Flow" made #28 Hot 100, #6 R&B, #18 AC)

"Midnight Train to Georgia was a #1 Smash on the Hot 100 and R&B chart. (#19 AC) It won a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance By A Duo, Group Or Chorus.

"I've Got to Use My Imagination" made #4 and #1 R&B.

"Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me" peaked at #3 and #1 R&B (10 AC) It was a #1 charting country song that they picked to do in a pop/R&B version.






Herbie Hancock released his twelfth album Head Hunters.

"Chameleon" was the only single released and peaked at #42 and #18 R&B.

Popular "Watermelon Man" was on this album as well.




Quincy Jones released You've Got It Bad Girl.

The album is notable for two TV Theme songs.

"Sanford and Son Theme (The Streebeater)" and "Chump Change" which was co-written by Bill Cosby and used as the main theme for The New Bill Cosby Show.
